Cervicogenic Headache

Cervicogenic headaches are headaches that arise from dysfunction coming from the cervical spine. There are many different reasons for headaches, and it can be hard to know what kind of headache you are suffering from.  However, if the headache is stemming from a problem in your neck, it could be a cervicogenic headache. A very common sign of cervicogenic headaches is pain triggered with a sudden movement of your neck. The pain also gets worse when your neck is in the same position for some time. Other signs of cervicogenic headache include, pain on one side of the head or face or base of the skull, steady pain, pain while taking a deep breath, sneezing or coughing, pain lasting for hours or even several days, and stiffness in your neck.

Chiropractic care for cervicogenic headaches

Chiropractic care for cervicogenic headaches includes spinal manipulation and a combination of active and passive exercises to restore proper joint function, decrease muscle tension, and strengthen the deep neck flexors. This can be for both the management and prevention of headaches. The headache often does not improve with medication and chiropractic care is considered to be one of the best treatments for this particular type of headache, even if the condition is chronic.
