Back-Pain-From-Mattress

5 Best Mattresses Recommended by Chiropractors

I am frequently asked by patients what mattresses I recommend for their pain or particular condition. Patients want to know where to find the best mattresses for chronic pain, sciatica, back pain, neck pain, hip pain, shoulder pain, disc issues, muscle spasms, and after spinal surgery.

Nowadays most mattresses are sold online, which makes picking a bed a difficult task.  It is a costly purchase that you will spend a lot of time using, so it is important to make an educated decision.

Choosing the wrong mattress could cost you thousands of dollars and many nights of pain and restless sleep. I have some knowledge to share with you to make sure this doesn’t happen.

Support and Pressure Relief

Support – If you are reading this article it’s likely you suffer from back pain, and this is why support is the most important criteria when searching for a mattress. Support = pushing up into you.

It means giving those areas of your body the assistance they need to relax and de-stress throughout the night.

The area of your body that needs this the most is the lumbar spine (low back). If you are a back sleeper then a mattress that is “comfy”, plush or soft will cause you to sink in, and will not give your body the support it needs, leaving your muscles tired from working all night to support your mid and low back.

So, If you are a back sleeper or suffer from middle or low back pain then a supportive mattress is what your body needs.

Pressure Relief – Pressure relief is another important criteria when searching for a mattress that helps relieve your pain. Pressure relief = you pushing into the mattress. This is not to be confused with sinking in.

A quality mattress that relieves pressure points should gently but firmly support your body in a comfortable position. What parts of the body need pressure relief? Parts that stick out, particularly the shoulders and hips.

Without pressure relief, these areas are being compressed and are forced to constant stress throughout the night. So, if you are a side sleeper or suffer from hip and shoulder pain then a mattress that gives you pressure relief is what’s best for your body.

So what is the best mattress? I have done considerable research and made recommendations on the best mattresses for my patients. I have comprised a list of 5 mattresses that I recommend. Here are the top 5 mattresses that are best for back pain.

Dr. Siraguso’s Choice – #1 Mattress Recommended By Chiropractors – Saatva

Saatva

After reviewing over 50 brands the company that hits all the criteria to be recommended to most any person with chronic pain, low back pain, disc issues, hip pain, shoulder pain, or other chiropractic conditions is Saatva.

I typically recommend hybrid memory foam or latex mattresses because they have a nice balance between support and pressure relief.

You also need a mattress that is resilient, breathable, and sources good materials. The Saatva brand is a reputable long-standing luxury mattress company that meets all these criteria at an affordable price.

The Best Mattress For Low Back Pain

The Saatva Classic is a hybrid memory foam, and offers perhaps the best combination of support and pressure relief because of the way it is designed.

It has active wire zone that is built into the center of the mattress, which keeps the mattress middle from indenting or sinking in overtime. This offers additional support for the lumbar spine, and for those who sleep on their back.

Their dual innerspring coil system is responsive to your movements so the mattress remains contoured to your body, which is important so the spine maintains a neutral position throughout the night, especially for those who sleep on their side.

Finally, the mattress is layered with several inches of memory foam and then finished with a luxury euro pillowtop. These features offer pressure relief for the hips, shoulders, and for those who sleep on their side.

Saatva offers several firmness levels but I recommend the luxury firm. Also, this particular mattress carries a 4.9 rating with over 1,900 online reviews from verified purchasers. Here are just a few reviews:

    Answer To My Prayers!

I spent months researching mattress to find the perfect match for us. My husband and I both had back pain each morning after a terrible night sleep until we slept on the Saavta Classic for one night. We cannot feel each other move nearly as much in fact hardly at all and when he ends up close to me I am not sinking towards him. The old mattress forced me to move to a recliner just to get some sleep. Now, combined with proper chiropractor care, I actually look forward to bed each night and am thankful my hubby and I can share a bed. After careful review of each mattress, if you are not sure which mattress is best for you, call or email customer service. They have the answers you need. Saavta employees actually care about their customers. Thank you Saavta!!

Really Great Mattress! (And I Have Chronic Back Pain Issues)

I’m a RN for almost 34 years (25 years hospital-based, still working now on a busy unit). I have chronic daily (at times severe) back pain from a variety of orthopedic back issues. My last mattress was a Tempurpedic, which was great for a long time, but I reached the point I could not sleep more than 2 hrs at a time, literally, due to pain. I bought the Saatva Classic Mattress, Queen size 11.5″ Luxury Firm for my platform bed. It arrived last week. My 1st night on the Saatva mattess I got 13 hours of sleep. I sleep on my sides, my back, and stomach. No matter what position, I’ve been waking up with NO pain. I could not be HAPPIER.

    Best Purchase Ever

I ordered this mattress bc of a friend’s recommendation and after reading the reviews which showed the company to be reputable and willing to take the mattress back if I was unhappy. I have had lower back pain for years. We have had name brand pillowtop mattresses and they just have not cut it. My back pain was out of control. My husband wasn’t sleeping well. This mattress changed both those things. It’s the best purchase I’ve ever made. This mattress feels like I’m sleeping on a supportive cloud. I ordered the 14.5″ luxury firm in a king. I’m very happy with the height as well. The new bed I ordered does not require a box spring but I wanted the height as though it did. The 14.5″ mattress did that for me with no additional cost. Highly recommend.

#2 – Idle Sleep

Idle Sleep

Idle Sleep, particularly their Hybrid Talalay Latex Mattress is a great choice for patients who are looking for an eco-friendly, supportive, long-lasting mattress.

Idle Sleep has so many different technologies all built into their mattresses. They offer memory foam, hybrid memory foam, and hybrid latex mattresses.

The hybrid mattresses in particular are what I recommend because the core of the mattresses have a built-in spring system that helps them hold their resilience over time.

Idle beds are also flippable, easily doubling the lifespan of your mattress.

No worries about choosing this mattress because it comes with an 18 month home trial and lifetime warranty.

The Hybrid Talalay Latex Mattress is a mattress that has quality and luxury that you can see and feel. This mattress also covers all the criteria I look for when searching for a mattress for those in pain.

The Talalay Latex is an organic, lighter, more forgiving latex that gives you the pressure relief of memory foam but still offers the support that you need with latex.

So, if you suffer from pain in multiple areas then this is the mattress you are going to want.

It gives you pressure relief for the hips, shoulders, and side sleepers. It also gives you support for your mid & low back, and for back sleepers. Also, I recommend choosing the firm option.

The innerspring core makes it very stable and resilient.

The Talalay Latex is open-celled and lighter than Dunlop latex which makes it much more breathable, so if you are someone who sleeps hot then this is the mattress for you. Lastly, It’s naturally hypoallergenic and anti-microbial.

If you have moderate to severe hip or shoulder pain, or perhaps you are an avid side sleeper and want more pressure relief, then check out Idle Sleeps most popular mattress, their Memory Foam Hybrid Mattress .

#3 Mattress – Puffy Mattress

Puffy Mattress
Puffy Mattress

The Puffy Mattress

The Puffy Lux Mattress is the mattress for someone who is looking for something a little softer. If you are looking for pressure relief, this mattress does just that.

I have actually slept on this mattress and although it was too soft for me, it may be a good choice for someone who needs a lot of pressure relief off their hips or shoulders.

The Puffy Lux has climate-adaptive middle materials that are designed in a way to regulate body temperature while you sleep. Its top cooling cloud layer will ensure you do not get too hot throughout the night.

The bottom layer is a transitioning firm layer that gives a bit of support. This mattress is also non-toxic, American made and  CertiPUR-US Certified.

#4 – DreamCloud Sleep

DreamCloud Sleep

I don’t typically recommend pillow top mattresses because from my clinical experience they lose their resilience and sink in overtime.

However, I know some prefer pillow-top mattresses to a memory foam, and the DreamCloud Mattress isn’t strictly a pillow top, it is technically a hybrid mattress of different materials.

The dream cloud has combined an interspring coil, memory foam, and pillow-top all in one. Let’s start at the bottom and work our way up.

The DreamCloud is designed on a solid foundation that will not bend, warp, shift over time.

Layered a top of the firm foundational layer is the pocketed interspring coil system. These coils provide specific targeted support throughout the mattress.

It is then layered with two memory foam materials, a resilient and responsive foam material, and then a cooling comfort gel-infused memory foam for temperature control and breathability.

Finally, it is topped with a CASHEX cashmere plush cushion for soft comfort.

The mattress has a sleep trial of 365 days, the longest trial on the market that I have seen.

It comes with a limited lifetime warranty, but for the first 10 years of ownership, they will replace your mattress with a brand new DreamCloud at no charge to you if defective in workmanship and materials. The mattress has a 4.6 overall rating with 2,345 reviews.

#5 – Layla Mattress

Layla Logo
Layla Mattress

Layla Mattress

The Layla mattress is one of the more popular mattresses on the online market today.

One of the reasons I recommend this mattress is the unique flippable memory foam with two different firmness, so you have two different options to find the right fit for you.

The soft side is about a 4.5, or you can flip is over and try the firmer side at a 7.

The Layla mattress consists of a highly resilient copper-infused memory foam on both sides with a gel filled top cover to keep you cool at night.

This mattress is also antimicrobial, and fights odor-causing bacteria to keep your mattress fresh.

I recommend the firmer 7 if you suffer from low back pain, because medium-firm memory foam is best for lumbar support (for back sleepers) and keeping the spine in neutral position throughout the night (side sleepers).

The consensus seems to be the same after reading some of the 4500 reviews.
