5 Best Mattresses Recommended by Chiropractors

5 Best Mattresses Recommended by Chiropractic

I am frequently asked by patients what mattresses I recommend for their pain or particular condition. Patients want to know where to find the best mattresses for chronic pain, sciatica, back pain, neck pain, hip pain, shoulder pain, disc issues, muscle spasms, and after spinal surgery.

Nowadays most mattresses are sold online, which makes picking a bed a difficult task.  It is a costly purchase that you will spend a lot of time using, so it is important to make an educated decision.

Choosing the wrong mattress could cost you thousands of dollars and many nights of pain and restless sleep. I have some knowledge to share with you to make sure this doesn’t happen.

Support and Pressure Relief

Support – If you are reading this article it’s likely you suffer from back pain, and this is why support is the most important criteria when searching for a mattress. Support = pushing up into you.

It means giving those areas of your body the assistance they need to relax and de-stress throughout the night.

The area of your body that needs this the most is the lumbar spine (low back). If you are a back sleeper then a mattress that is “comfy”, plush or soft will cause you to sink in, and will not give your body the support it needs, leaving your muscles tired from working all night to support your mid and low back.

So, If you are a back sleeper or suffer from middle or low back pain then a supportive mattress is what your body needs.

Pressure Relief – Pressure relief is another important criteria when searching for a mattress that helps relieve your pain. Pressure relief = you pushing into the mattress. This is not to be confused with sinking in.

A quality mattress that relieves pressure points should gently but firmly support your body in a comfortable position. What parts of the body need pressure relief? Parts that stick out, particularly the shoulders and hips.

Without pressure relief, these areas are being compressed and are forced to constant stress throughout the night. So, if you are a side sleeper or suffer from hip and shoulder pain then a mattress that gives you pressure relief is what’s best for your body.

So what is the best mattress? I have done considerable research and made recommendations on the best mattresses for my patients. I have comprised a list of 5 mattresses that I recommend. Here are the top 5 mattresses that are best for back pain.

Dr. Siraguso’s Choice – #1 Mattress Recommended By Chiropractors – Saatva

Saatva Luxury Mattress
Saatva Luxury Mattress

Saatva

After reviewing over 50 mattress brands the company that hits all the criteria to be recommended to most any person with chronic pain, low back pain, disc issues, hip pain, shoulder pain, or other chiropractic conditions is Saatva.

I typically recommend hybrid memory foam or latex mattresses because they have a nice balance between support and pressure relief.

You also need a mattress that is resilient, breathable, and sources good materials. The Saatva brand is a reputable long-standing luxury mattress company that meets all these criteria at an affordable price.

The Best Mattress For Low Back Pain

The Saatva Classic is a hybrid memory foam, and offers perhaps the best combination of support and pressure relief because of the way it is designed.

It has active wire zone that is built into the center of the mattress, which keeps the mattress middle from indenting or sinking in overtime. This offers additional support for the lumbar spine, and for those who sleep on their back.

Their dual innerspring coil system is responsive to your movements so the mattress remains contoured to your body, which is important so the spine maintains a neutral position throughout the night, especially for those who sleep on their side.

Finally, the mattress is layered with several inches of memory foam and then finished with a luxury euro pillowtop. These features offer pressure relief for the hips, shoulders, and for those who sleep on their side.

Saatva offers several firmness levels but I recommend the luxury firm. Also, this particular mattress carries a 4.9 rating with over 1,900 online reviews from verified purchasers. Here are just a few reviews:

    Answer To My Prayers!

I spent months researching mattress to find the perfect match for us. My husband and I both had back pain each morning after a terrible night sleep until we slept on the Saavta Classic for one night. We cannot feel each other move nearly as much in fact hardly at all and when he ends up close to me I am not sinking towards him. The old mattress forced me to move to a recliner just to get some sleep. Now, combined with proper chiropractor care, I actually look forward to bed each night and am thankful my hubby and I can share a bed. After careful review of each mattress, if you are not sure which mattress is best for you, call or email customer service. They have the answers you need. Saavta employees actually care about their customers. Thank you Saavta!!

Really Great Mattress! (And I Have Chronic Back Pain Issues)

I’m a RN for almost 34 years (25 years hospital-based, still working now on a busy unit). I have chronic daily (at times severe) back pain from a variety of orthopedic back issues. My last mattress was a Tempurpedic, which was great for a long time, but I reached the point I could not sleep more than 2 hrs at a time, literally, due to pain. I bought the Saatva Classic Mattress, Queen size 11.5″ Luxury Firm for my platform bed. It arrived last week. My 1st night on the Saatva mattess I got 13 hours of sleep. I sleep on my sides, my back, and stomach. No matter what position, I’ve been waking up with NO pain. I could not be HAPPIER.

    Best Purchase Ever

I ordered this mattress bc of a friend’s recommendation and after reading the reviews which showed the company to be reputable and willing to take the mattress back if I was unhappy. I have had lower back pain for years. We have had name brand pillowtop mattresses and they just have not cut it. My back pain was out of control. My husband wasn’t sleeping well. This mattress changed both those things. It’s the best purchase I’ve ever made. This mattress feels like I’m sleeping on a supportive cloud. I ordered the 14.5″ luxury firm in a king. I’m very happy with the height as well. The new bed I ordered does not require a box spring but I wanted the height as though it did. The 14.5″ mattress did that for me with no additional cost. Highly recommend.

#2 Mattress – Cocoon By Sealy

Cocoon Mattress by Sealy
Cocoon Mattress by Sealy

Cocoon By Sealy

Everyone knows who Sealy is. They are the most popular mattress brand in the world. They own companies such as Tempurpedic, Posturpedic, Stearns and Foster, and many more. Their new Cocoon Mattress has been rolled out to compete with the new online direct to consumer mattress brands.

The Cocoon Mattress is the bed I recommend for those who sleep hot and who are looking for a medium firmness, but still don’t want to sacrifice on support. So, if you are looking for pressure relief this mattress does just that.

Sealy has developed two versions of the Cocoon Mattress, the Chill Memory Foam and the Chill Hybrid (recommended).

Best Mattresses for Side Sleepers

Best Mattress For Side Sleepers

The Cocoon Chill Hybrid is my recommended pick of the two mattresses for side sleepers who prefer a medium firmness. This mattress is made with responsive active support coils that absorb motion transfer while still contouring to your body the way a traditional memory foam mattress does. It does this by layering its perfect fit memory foam technology on top of the targeted support coils. This proprietary memory foam adapts to your body and its preferred sleeping position, making it perfect for the side sleepers who need pressure relief from their hips and shoulders. It is also layered with a cooling cover that absorbs and dissipates heat for those who sleep hot throughout the night.

Best Memory Foam Mattress

Best Memory Foam Mattress

It is important to note that I recommend hybrid mattresses. However, if you prefer strictly memory foam then why buy anywhere other than the most reputable brand in the industry, and the Cocoon Chill Memory Foam Mattress is just that. This bed has three layers of high grade premium memory foam. It starts with it’s robust essential support layer that is firm, durable, and resilient. Then there is the responsive comfort foam layer that gives cushioning, support, and reduces motion transfer. Lastly, there is the perfect fit memory foam layer that contours and adapts to your body’s sleeping position.

This mattress has a 4.7 rating with over 5600 verified reviews.

#3 – Layla

Layla Hybrid Mattress
Layla Hybrid Mattress

Layla Hybrid

The Layla hybrid mattress is perhaps the most innovative hybrid memory foam mattress on the market today. This mattress covers all the criteria I look for when searching for a mattress for those in pain.

As stated previously, I recommend hybrid latex and hybrid memory foam mattresses, and one of the reasons I recommend The Layla Hybrid mattress is because of its unique flippable design. This hybrid memory foam has two different firmness, so you have two different options to find the right fit for you.

Typically, I recommend the firm side which is a 7/10 firmness level. This is best for those who prefer a firmer mattress and are back sleepers or stomach sleepers. Also, it is best for those who have lower back pain, mid back pain, chronic pain, or any other spinal condition. The soft side is about a 4.5/10 firmness, which I recommend for those who are side sleepers, or suffer from hip or shoulder pain.

Layla’s Hybrid Memory Foam Layers

Layla’s Hybrid Memory Foam Layers

The Layla Hybrid Mattress consists of a 2.5-inch highly resilient copper gel infused memory foam. The copper gel is a rapid cooling layer that pulls heat away resulting in a much cooler sleep. This mattress layer is also antimicrobial, and fights odor-causing bacteria to keep your mattress fresh.

The Layla also has a 2 inch layer of surface modification technology foam. This is an anti-motion transfer foam that won’t allow you to disturb your partner, but is also responsive enough that you don’t feel stuck in your mattress. The SMT memory foam, combined with an internal pocketed coil system, is what makes Layla so responsive, yet so good at controlling motion.

The Layla Hybrid has over 600 reviews with a 4.7 rating. Best of all, it is affordable, has a 365 night trial period, and comes with a 25 year warranty, so you don’t have to worry about buyers remorse.

#4 – DreamCloud Sleep

DreamCloud Sleep Mattress
DreamCloud Sleep Mattress

DreamCloud Sleep

I don’t typically recommend pillow top mattresses because from my clinical experience they lose their resilience and sink in overtime.

However, I know some prefer pillow-top mattresses to a memory foam, and the DreamCloud Mattress isn’t strictly a pillow top, it is technically a hybrid mattress of different materials.

The dream cloud has combined an interspring coil, memory foam, and pillow-top all in one. Let’s start at the bottom and work our way up.

The DreamCloud is designed on a solid foundation that will not bend, warp, shift over time.

Layered a top of the firm foundational layer is the pocketed interspring coil system. These coils provide specific targeted support throughout the mattress.

It is then layered with two memory foam materials, a resilient and responsive foam material, and then a cooling comfort gel-infused memory foam for temperature control and breathability.

Finally, it is topped with a CASHEX cashmere plush cushion for soft comfort.

The mattress has a sleep trial of 365 days, the longest trial on the market that I have seen.

It comes with a limited lifetime warranty, but for the first 10 years of ownership, they will replace your mattress with a brand new DreamCloud at no charge to you if defective in workmanship and materials. The mattress has a 4.6 overall rating with 2,345 reviews.

#5 – Sweetnight – Twilight Mattress

SweetNight Twilight Mattress
SweetNight Twilight Mattress

Twilight Mattress

Sweet night’s Twilight mattress rounds out our list as one of the best chiropractic recommended mattresses for back pain. It is also the most affordable hybrid memory foam mattress listed, for those who are looking for a pain free sleep, but also looking to save money. Never heard of this brand? Most people haven’t, but that will soon change.

This is a pillow top, memory foam, & inner springs hybrid mattress all in one. The top layer starts with a plush cotton pillow top for a superficial cushion on your joints. Under this is a gel infused memory foam layer that excels in supporting your body while keeping you cool at night. Below this is an extra layer of supportive high-density foam. Lastly, the mattress has individually wrapped pocketed coils to prevent sagging and motion transfer. Best of all, a queen size mattress is only $498.

The Twilight Mattress has a 4.8 rating with over 1000 reviews. It has a 30-year warranty and a 100-night trial period. Only downside to this mattress is that it is not made in America.
