Criteria to Choose the Best Mattress for Back Pain
If you want to find the best mattress for back pain, there are many factors to consider. Let’s talk about them.
1. Support for Proper Spine Alignment
If you’re reading this article, it’s likely that you suffer from back issues, and support is the most important factor when choosing the best mattress for back pain. Support means giving those areas of your body the assistance they need to relax and de-stress throughout the night. Proper spinal alignment is key to ensuring you get the best possible sleep quality and relief from lower back pain.
The area of your body that needs the most support is the lumbar spine (low back). If you’re a back sleeper, a mattress that is too comfy, plush, or soft will cause you to sink in, failing to provide the support your body requires. If you’re wondering what firmness is best for back pain, back sleepers, and stomach sleepers, then finding the medium-firm mattress is the best option for you. Also, f you are a patient with middle or low back pain, then a supportive mattress for is exactly what your body needs.
2. Pressure Relief to Ease Joint Pain
Pressure relief is another important factor when searching for the best mattress for back pain. Pressure relief = the support you push into the mattress. This is different from sinking in.
The quality mattress, such as memory foam, latex, and hybrid mattresses, offers good pressure relief and can help minimize compression. For individuals looking for the best mattress for sciatica or best mattress for hip pain, these materials are ideal
Without proper pressure relief, these areas will become compressed, resulting in constant stress throughout the night. So, if you’re a side sleeper or suffer from hip pain and shoulder pain, a mattress designed for pressure relief is what’s best for your body. Find the best mattress for pressure relief at leading mattress retailers, and shop for the ideal mattress for shoulder and hip pain to get the support you need.
3. Mattress Firmness
For back pain relief, choosing the right mattress firmness level is critical. In order to keep the spine in proper alignment, it is essential that you choose the appropriate firmness. Generally speaking, a medium-firm mattress will be the best choice for back pain sufferers. If you want to buy a firm mattress for back pain, you should ensure that it provides both support and comfort.
4. Durability for Long-Term Relief
The pain in your back can get worse if you choose a bed that is not durable and does not provide pressure relief or support. Make sure the mattress is sturdy and constructed from quality materials. The durability of memory foam mattresses, hybrid mattresses, and other high-quality mattresses is well known. They also provide relief for back pain over a long period. Make sure you read mattress reviews before purchasing to determine if it will suit your needs.
5. Material for Comfort and Support
If you are looking for the best mattress for scoliosis or for sciatica pain relief, consider what material best suits your requirements and tastes. While choosing the best mattress for side sleepers with back pain, or simply a mattress for back pain relief, you should prioritize comfort, support, and pressure relief. Find the right balance of support and comfort when shopping for mattresses for bad backs or the best mattress for a bad back. If you want to save money, search for cheap box spring or mattress sets.

Best Mattress For Stomach Sleepers
2: Tempur-Pedic Mattress: The Ultimate Solution for Stomach Sleepers with Back Pain
Tempur-Pedic is a trusted brand in the mattress industry, known for their innovative, high-quality mattresses. Tempurpedic mattresses, known for superior memory foam technologies, are made to offer exceptional comfort and support for people with sleeping disorders like stomach sleep.
Features of the Tempur-Pedic Pro Adapt Mattress
The mattress I recommend for stomach sleepers is the Pro Adapt advanced pressure relief model with a firm “feel”.
- Each proprietary layer of memory foam built into the mattress has a cellular structure with a specific purpose.
- The Pro Adapt starts with a “Comfort” memory foam layer that is designed to give you the “sleeping on a cloud” feel.
- Its responsiveness adapts to your weight, your body shape, and whichever temperature you sleep at night. This is what helps alleviate pressure points in any position and will keep you from tossing and turning throughout the night.
Best Mattress For Stomach Sleepers
As stated previously, I recommend hybrid latex and hybrid memory foam mattresses, but a firm or ultra-firm memory foam would be better suited for stomach sleepers.
It’s not recommended to sleep on your stomach because your lower back is not getting support from the mattress, so your muscles are having to work all night to support your spine. However, if you do sleep on your stomach, I recommend a firmer mattress. Tempur-Pedic makes a firm memory foam that I recommend specifically for stomach sleepers.
Tempur-Pedic (you may have heard of them) is one of the largest and most well-known mattress brands in the world. They are credited with developing and maintaining some of the most advanced memory foams. The Tempur-Pedic is perhaps the most innovative hybrid memory foam mattress on the market today. This mattress covers all the criteria I look for when searching for a mattress for stomach sleepers with back pain.
Why Tempur-Pedic Pro Adapt is the Best Mattress for Stomach Sleepers
Did you know 95% of Tempur-Pedic mattress owners experience better sleep with fewer aches and pains? Knowing this information and understanding how the combination of all these foam technologies works is why I recommend Tempur-Pedic, the mattress originally built for NASA astronauts, as the overall Best Mattress For Stomach Sleepers. Here are the two main reasons why this is the best mattress for stomach sleepers.
1: The “Support Layer”
Deeper into the mattress is the “Support Layer.”. This is a firmer memory foam layer that keeps the mattress from bowing or sinking in. Its job is to push up into you to allow your muscles and joints to relax and be supported throughout the entire night. This layer is perhaps the most important for those who are looking for a mattress for back pain because most nighttime back pain sufferers are lacking a supportive mattress.
2: The Responsive Hybrid Inner-Coil System
Below the proprietary Tempur-Pedic foam layers, you will find a responsive hybrid inner-coil system that has 1000+ innerspring built into the bed. This helps preserve the core of the mattress, decreases motion transfer, and gives you extra support along the edges.
Other Tempurpedic Mattresses
While the Tempur Pedic Pro Adapt comes highly recommended due to its outstanding support and relief from pressure, Tempur Pedic also offers a variety of mattresses which may suit your personal needs and sleeping conditions. Consider these options:
- The Tempur-Pedic Pro Breeze: If you are prone to sleeping hot, then the Tempur-Pedic Pro Breeze mattress is for you. the best mattress that has cooling technology. The model regulates temperature to provide a cool sleep, ideal for people who have night sweats or like a cooler sleeping surface.
- LuxeAdapt: For those looking for a luxurious bed that has a soft feel, LuxeAdapt provides comfort and luxury. The mattress provides a luxurious experience, while also providing the firm support needed to relieve lower back pain.
- Tempur-Pedic Adapt: Tempur-Pedic Adapt offers similar benefits to Pro Adapt at a lower price. The Adapt is perfect for those who want the high-quality support and relief, but don’t need to pay a higher price. The Adapt is a good choice for those who are looking to save money. It offers a nice balance between comfort and affordability.

3: Stearns & Foster : Best Mattress for Side Sleepers with Back Pain
Stearns & Foster provides exceptional pressure relief and support, which makes it a great choice for those who side-sleep with back pain. The high-end material and hybrid design of this mattress ensure comfort and alignment all night long.
The Mattress For Side Sleepers
Stearns & Foster provides exceptional pressure relief and support, making it one of the best mattresses for side sleepers with back pain. I don’t typically recommend pillow top mattresses because, from my clinical experience, they lose their resilience and sink in over time, but this isn’t any ordinary pillow top. This is Stearns & Foster.
I recommend pillow top mattresses for side sleepers. This is because side sleepers need enough pressure relief for their hips and shoulders that stick out, but also enough support for the lower back to push up into the lumbar spine and keep it in a neutral position.
The Stearns & Foster Lux Estate Cassatt mattress is able to meet the pressure relief needs of the hips and shoulders, while still supporting the spine. This is because the mattress pillow top is made of high-end memory foam from the sleep scientists at Tempur-Pedic. This bed is also a hybrid mattress which adheres to the criteria I consistently recommend for side sleepers with back pain, ensuring a restful night of sleep.
- Side Sleepers with Hip and Shoulder Pain
If you suffer from hip and shoulder pain, then you need a mattress that is made with a focus on pressure relief. The Stearns & Foster Lux Estate Cassatt with a pillow top firm “feel” selection is the exact specifications you need to get a good night’s rest as a side sleeper.
- Pressure Relief and Spine Support
The mattress starts with a robust and resilient pillow top that adheres to the spine and offers plenty of cushioned pressure point relief for those joints that stick out.
The Lux Estate has not one or two… but five layers of high-density memory foam material each specifically designed to give you that perfect luxury feel and complete comfort.
- Hybrid Construction for Ultimate Comfort
The hybrid portion of this mattress contains upgraded IntelliCoil HD Innersprings. These coils are one of a kind and designed to give you maximum support in the core of the mattress, so you’ll never worry about sinking into your bed.
There are so many layers to this luxury mattress, so the designers paid particular attention to the cooling system. Each individual coil within the mattress is ventilated and the whole bed is made with external copper air vents to prevent heat from being trapped inside. This will allow your body to stay cool and comfortable throughout the night.

FAQ’s
Best Chiropractic Recommended Mattress
The Best Chiropractic recommended mattress is one that provides the perfect balance of support for your low back and mid back, and pressure relief for your hips and shoulders. A medium-firm hybrid memory foam or latex mattress can get the job done. This type of mattress will allow your body to stay in a neutral spine position. It will give your body the support it needs so you don’t sink into the mattress, while also not being too firm on your body, for those areas that stick out, that need relief from pressure points.
There are 1000’s of options so choosing the right reputable mattress company can be tough. I recommend looking at materials used and reviews, as well as the criteria I use above to make sure you are purchasing a mattress that will last a long time and give you the pain relief and restful sleep you need.
Best Mattress For Lower Back Pain
The best mattress for low back pain is one with support. I cannot stress support enough. If you suffer from low back pain, there’s a high likelihood your lower back is under a tremendous amount of stress during your daily activities. When you go to sleep at night your mattress needs to be supportive and push up into your curved lower back. If it does not then those low back muscles have to work extra hard to support your spine all night, keeping them from getting the much needed rest and recovery they need. Overtime your discs will not be able to rehydrate and decompress, and you end up with more severe lower back issues down the road.
I recommend finding a mattress that is more on the firmer side to support your lower back. Make sure it is from a company that has good reviews and promotes a mattress product with resilient materials. Feel free to checkout my doctor recommended mattress recommendations.
Best Mattress For Hip And Shoulder Pain
I notice with my Chiropractic patients that their hip or shoulder pain can sometimes worsen while sleeping at night due to their mattress. This is because your hips and shoulders aren’t getting the pressure point relief they need from your mattress. Hips and shoulders are “ball and socket” joints. When you sleep on your side and have pain in these areas it’s because your mattress is compressing these joints at night. It means the mattress is too firm for your bodies issues, and you needs a mattress that will form to the body where needed, to give you pressure relief in those areas that stick out.
I recommended finding a medium firmness mattress that is built solely for pressure point relief on these areas. Do not go to plush though, otherwise your body will start having issues in other areas if your mattress lacks any support at all. Find a nice balance between the two, and find a reputable company that designs their mattresses with good materials. Feel free to see my mattress recommendations for those with hip and shoulder pain.
Best Mattress For Back Sleepers
If you are a back sleeper and you suffer from mid back pain or lower back pain then you are going to want a very supportive mattress. Your lower back sits in a lordotic curve. This is a fancy way of saying it bows inward, so if you have a mattress that you sink into then your lower back is not getting the support it needs to rest, leaving you in a constant state of pain. The longer your spine goes without support the more deterioration to your muscles, joints, discs can occur, and symptoms will worsen. Also, a chiropractic sleeping tip is to put a pillow or bolster underneath your knees. This flattens out that inward lower back curve and allows your muscles and joints to get even further support from your mattress.
As a Chiropractor I always recommend back sleepers that suffer with lower back pain a firm mattress that pushes up into you. Make sure it’s resilient enough to last at least 8 years, so make sure the company is reputable and the reviews are good. I also have specific mattress recommendations I offer to my patients, and on my website.
Best Mattress For Side Sleepers
If you are a side sleeper with back pain, shoulder pain, or hip pain then you may want to look into a mattress that can manage the needs of your lower back with support, and the pressure point relief of your hips and shoulder. This can be tricky but not impossible. Finding a nice balance in a mattress is the key to back pain relief. As a side sleeper your hips and shoulders stick out and need relief from compression from the mattress, while your lumbar spine bows in. So, you need a mattress that will also push up into you.
For side sleepers with back pain, hip pain, or shoulder pain look into a medium-firm memory foam or latex mattress. Latex is more resilient and faster responding than memory foam so it can contour to both area easier. It is also all natural as opposed to memory foam which is made with harsh chemicals. See my chiropractic recommendations for side sleepers with back pain.
Best Mattress For Stomach Sleepers
If you are a stomach sleeper with back pain then my first recommendation is to stop sleeping on your stomach lol. This position is the worst sleeping position for your spine. Your muscles are always having to support your spine throughout the night and your neck is cranked to one side or the other for hours at a time. Realistically, it is a tough habit to break and many who try and break it fail, because they eventually wake up back in the position that they are accustomed to. So, if you are going to sleep in that position I recommend a firm or ultra firm hybrid memory foam. You need a mattress that is very very supportive, because the more give your mattress has the more your lumbar spine will curve inward and leave you an extended position with seriously tight low back muscles. An ultra firm hybrid memory foam will at least get you as much support as a mattress will allow.
My recommendations on the mattress I chose for stomach sleepers with back pain can be found on my blog.
Most Affordable Mattress For Back Pain
It’s understandable to shop for mattresses on a budget, because they cost an arm and a leg. Spending thousands of dollars on a mattress, and not being sure if it’s the right mattress to relieve your back pain is a scary thought. When shopping for an affordable mattress for back pain you always always always want to make sure it’s a very well known reputable company. This is because less known brands who discount their prices are using poor quality materials that will not last.
Here’s a little secret. Did you know Sealy owns Tempurpedic and Stearns & Foster? They are the largest mattress brand in the world. Many times they use the same quality materials in their mattresses, but at different prices. Sealy offers a very affordable quality mattress called the cocoon. It’s a great memory foam mattress that meets all the criteria listed in my article for a chiropractic recommended mattress for back pain. I know it’s great because I used to sleep on it, and it served me well.
